10/3/2023 0 Comments Pathfinder 10Loudness: On the maximum volume, the Vox Pathfinder registered a 115DB while the Fender Frontman did a 110DB.Īs mentioned in the review, it excels at the overdrive channel.the Vox Pathfinder’s overdrive channel need more work to get it right but still sounds more distorted than the Frontman. It sound raw and angry, although not exactly at the heavy metal level. Overdrive: Fender Frontman has a really crunchy dirty tone that can be achieve with the overdrive channel.Fender Frontman has a lighter bass response and even a slight ratting. Bass response: On the clean channel, Vox Pathfinder has a nicer bass response with a heavier thump even though it is an open back.In contrast, Fender Frontman sounds a bit static. Clean tone: On the clean channel, the Vox Pathfinder sounds warmer and rich, and has a better bass respond (see below).Price: Fender Frontman 10g cost about $60 while the Vox Pathfinder 10 is about $100.Headphone Jack: Both amps have headphone jacks for bedroom practice.Reverb: There are no reverbs on either one of the amp.Fender Frontman has only an on and off gain switch. Gain control: Vox Pathfinder has a gain knob that has different levels of gain control. Both speakers are about 6 inches in size. Open/closed backs: Fender Frontman 10g has a close back while the Vox Pathfinder is open back. The latter sounds better in general than the Fender stock speaker. The speaker in Fender is a special design while for Vox, it is a Bulldog speaker. Speakers: Fender has a 4 ohm speaker while Vox Pathfinder has a 8 ohm speaker. However, activating the gain on Vox’ s clean channel completely changes the tone such that it doesn’t sound as clean anymore. The big difference is that the gain knob can be activated while in clean channel on the Vox Pathfinder. They comprise an overdrive and a clean channel. Channels: Fender Frontman and Vox both have 2 channels. They do not contain any tubes and do not need any warm up before using.īelow are significant differences in their components and amp design. Technical Differencesīoth the Fender Frontman and the Vox Pathfinder are solid state amps. The Fender Frontmas is also cheaper than the Vox.įor more detailed differences, read on. Other differences include the Fender Frontman’s closed back vs Vox Pathfinder’s open back. The main difference is that the Fender Frontman has a more crunchy sound in the overdrive channel while the Vox Pathfinder 10 has a warmer clean channel. Why did you remove C12? I can understand bypassing C6 for example to avoid the low filter if you hook up a cab/other speaker.Looking for a 10-15watt amp but cannot decide between Fender Frontman 10g and the Vox Pathfinder 10? This detailed comparison will highlight their differences along almost every dimension you can imagine. The circuit now consists of a 1N4148, a 1N4001 and a 0.001uF ceramic capacitor to smooth the effect slightly. Instead, LD3 (the second LED in the overdrive circuit) has been removed and instead two diodes have been installed in opposite directions with lower forward voltage than the LEDs. This produces a lot more headroom, but results in opamp clipping at high gain/input. Here's what I documented at the time: Because opamp clipping is generally harsh and potentially even harsher than the LED based overdrive circuit on its own, removing them without a replacement is effectively the same as bypassing the resistor labeled R8 (22K) without engaging the LED's. That's blunt, but I've been here for shits and giggles.Īs for the LED's, I ended up with two non matched diodes and a cap. It does a fair clean sound for SS, and it even does the VOX chime. My advice is give up now, or use it as a learning experience where you can screw things up at a low price tag. I have one of those amps and took it to hell and back trying to find a way of getting a decent dirty sound out of it.
